Sravasti Datta delves into the intricate nature of romantic relationships, a complex concept that remains a challenge to explain for humanity. Theatre artist Shatarupa Bhattacharyya aims to shed light on this with her latest Hindi play, Silvatein, staged today at Ranga Shankara. Translated by Puneet Gupta, Shatarupa, having a decade of experience in theatre with around 20 productions, shares her insights on the creative process, the learning curve within theatre, and the dynamics of modern relationships. She expresses her thoughts, “Theatre enables me to intellectually and emotionally explore various issues.” Through the medium of theatre, she witnessed how abstract ideas can come to life in a compelling and emotional way. Shatarupa emphasizes that writing and staging Silvatein has been a cathartic experience, offering closure and initiating conversations that she hopes will motivate others. She believes theatre goes beyond just presenting facts and figures, fostering meaningful dialogues. Reflecting on the challenges of contemporary lifestyles, she notes, “Our hectic lives often neglect emotional connections, with stress infiltrating relationships and diminishing emotional presence. The prevalence of technology introduces distractions, promoting a culture of instant gratification in which relationships are expected to be effortless and perpetually fulfilling.” Shatarupa advocates for investing time and effort in nurturing meaningful connections. The energy spent on solving problems can now be saved by simply walking away or letting go. Our fast-paced lives leave little space for deep emotional connections, making relationships a low priority. Unhealthy relationships often revolve around power and control, as seen in Shatarupa's latest play inspired by her personal struggles with failed relationships. Through self-reflection and open communication, she realized the importance of understanding her emotions, triggers, and needs for personal well-being and healthy relationships. Recognizing how past experiences and assumptions influenced her reactions allowed Shatarupa to approach relationships with patience and empathy, embracing vulnerability and growth.
